1. Capricious (adjective)
Meaning: changing mood or behaviour suddenly and unexpectedly
Synonyms: impulsive, whimsical, freakish, unpredictable
Example: On the five-judge Bench, Justices Kurian Joseph and Rohinton Fali Nariman gave separate judgments against the validity of instant talaq. Justice U.U. Lalit supported Justice Nariman’s view that instant talaq given by a Muslim man “capriciously and whimsically,” without an attempt at reconciliation, was “manifestly arbitrary and violative of Article 14 (right to equality).”
2.Reminiscent (adjective)
Meaning: tending to remind one of something, suggesting something by resemblance.
Synonyms: similar to, comparable with, inviting/bearing comparison with, tending to make one think of.
Example: In Charlottesville, Virginia, a crowd of angry protesters marched on August 12 in a manner reminiscent of Nazi paramilitary gatherings. Most of them were white men protesting the removal of iconic statues of generals from the American Civil War who fought to preserve slavery.
3.Rebuke (verb)
Meaning: express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behaviour or actions.
Synonyms: reprimand, reproach, scold, admonish, reprove, remonstrate with, chastise, chide, upbraid, berate, take to task, pull up, castigate, lambaste, read someone the Riot Act, give someone a piece of one’s mind, haul over the coals, criticize, censure.
Example: However, a robust civil society rebuke from highly unlikely sources that has condemned both the Charlottesville violence and Mr. Trump’s morally bankrupt response to it gives cause for optimism about the strengths of American civil society. In the wake of Mr. Trump’s equivocation, eight leaders of major companies and business groups resigned from the President’s Manufacturing Council, beginning with Ken Frazier, the African-American CEO of Merck Pharmaceuticals, followed by CEOs of Under Armour and Intel among others.
4.Genesis (Noun)
Meaning: the origin or mode of formation of something.
Synonyms: origin, source, root, beginning, commencement, start, outset.
Example: A reading of Kautilya’s Arthashastra will help one understand the genesis of the state and how it needed to legitimise its authority through the evolution of the police as we know it today.
5.Abundant (adjective)
Meaning: existing or available in large quantities; plentiful.
Synonyms: plentiful, copious, ample, profuse, rich, lavish, liberal, generous, bountiful, large, huge, great, bumper, overflowing, superabundant, infinite, inexhaustible, opulent, prolific.
Example: Crime was petty in those days, not requiring any sophisticated methods of investigation and detection. Now, it is not only widespread and violent but also sophisticated with the abundant use of technology.
6.Yardstick (noun)
Meaning: a measuring rod a yard long, typically divided into inches., a standard used for comparison.
Synonyms: standard, measure, gauge, scale, guide, guideline, indicator, test, touchstone, barometer, specification, criterion, norm, average, benchmark, point of reference, model, pattern, rule, principle, paradigm, convention, ideal
Example: It is my conviction that the police force must address this fear in a focussed manner. It is my lament that many unenlightened governments in our country do not evaluate police performance by this yardstick.
7.Preoccupation (noun)
Meaning: the state or condition of being preoccupied or engrossed with something.
Synonyms: pensiveness, concentration, engrossment, absorption, self-absorption, musing, thinking, thinking of other things, deep thought, brown study, brooding.
Example: The strongest criticism against the police is of their preoccupation with the problems of the political party in power and those of the rich and famous.
8.Traitorous (adjective)
Meaning: relating to or characteristic of a traitor; treacherous.
Synonyms: treacherous, disloyal, treasonous, back-stabbing.
Example: But our failure to seize windows for political reconciliation has played into Pakistani hands and it is doing so again, while we waste our time in futile debates about who is more nationalist amongst Indians and who is more traitorous amongst Kashmiris.
9.Propulsion (noun)
Meaning: the action of driving or pushing forwards.
Synonyms: thrust, motive force, propelling force, impelling force, impetus, impulse, drive, driving force, actuation, push, surge, pressure, momentum, power
Example: As Phule and Ambedkar ignited the propulsion for a casteless order nationally, Periyar and Anna quickened a vital Tamil tide towards it.
10.Lamentation (noun)
Meaning: the passionate expression of grief or sorrow; weeping.
Synonyms: weeping, wailing, crying, sobbing, moaning, moan, sob, wail, lament, sorrow,
complaint, keening, grief, grieving, mourning,
Example: The coiling up of the movement into a series of internal power struggles, turning into schismatic power tussles and then breaking up into self-atomising power squabbles is a matter for lamentation, no less.
