The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For SSC CGL /MTS /CPO Exam

1.Infringement (noun)
Meaning: the action of breaking the terms of a law, agreement, etc.; violation.
synonyms: contravention, violation, transgression, breach, breaking, non-observance, non-compliance, neglect, dereliction, failure to observe;
Example: Why is this security net necessary, and why is its proposed infringement shameful? Our protected monuments, from the Taj Mahal to the monuments of Mamallapuram, have a designated prohibited area — at least a 100-m radius — to protect them, where no new construction is allowed. 

2.Encroachment (noun)
Meaning: intrusion on a person’s territory, rights, etc.
synonyms: intrusion into, trespass on, invasion of, infiltration of, incursion into, obtrusion into, overrunning of, usurping of.
Example: he only protection for our defenceless heritage has come from courts of law because there are legal provisions which, at least on paper, prevent the encroachment of the prohibited zone around monuments.
3.Manifesto (noun)
Meaning: a public declaration of policy and aims, especially one issued before an election by a political party or candidate.
Synonyms: policy statement, platform, programme, declaration, proclamation, pronouncement, announcement, publication, notification.
Example: The AAP government had appointed 21 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries in March 2015 to include MLAs in governance work and also to assist cabinet ministers in effective implementation of manifesto promises. Since then, Jarnail Singh, one of the 21 MLAs has resigned from his position.

4.Rapport (noun)
Meaning: a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each other’s feelings or ideas and communicate well.
Synonyms: affinity, close/special relationship, (mutual) understanding, bond, empathy, harmony, sympathy, link, accord.
Example: The fact that the two leaders struck a good rapport, marked by mutual “respect and friendship”, despite the difference in their personalities, augurs well. 
5.Imprimatur (noun)
Meaning: an official licence issued by the Roman Catholic Church to print an ecclesiastical or religious book., a person’s authoritative approval.
Example: In Mr. Trump’s own words, he had “tremendous success” in his meeting with Mr. Modi. Progress in bilateral relations over the last few years received the imprimatur of endorsement of the new President, and there were no missed heartbeats or gut-wrenching moments. 
6.Siege (noun)
Meaning: a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling those inside to surrender.
Synonyms: blockade, beleaguerment, encirclement; 
Example: The city of Marawi in the south of the Philippines has been engulfed by a deadly, ongoing siege since late May, when government forces began to take on heavily armed militants linked to the Islamic State. Local media estimate the death toll to be above 300. Over 200,000 residents have  fled what has effectively become an urban battlefield.

7.Obscure (adjective)
Meaning: not discovered or known about; uncertain.
Synonyms: unclear, uncertain, unknown, in doubt, doubtful, dubious, mysterious, hazy, vague, indeterminate, concealed, hidden
Example: The forthcoming election to the post of the President of India has produced a lot of debate: is Kovind more obscure than Pratibha Patil was, when announced as a candidate? Is this just your Dalit vs mine, or is the Opposition justified in putting up a contest on ideological grounds?
8.Effusive (adjective)
Meaning: showing or expressing gratitude, pleasure, or approval in an unrestrained or heartfelt manner.
Synonyms: gushing, gushy, unrestrained, unreserved, extravagant, fulsome, demonstrative, lavish, enthusiastic, rhapsodic, lyrical, exuberant, ebullient.
Example: Mr. Modi, as an astute student of human psychology, was effusive in both body language (the three “diplohugs” directed towards what some call a “germophobic” President!) and words of warm appreciation for the First Lady and Mr. Trump.
9.Render (verb)
Meaning: provide or give (a service, help, etc.)., cause to be or become; make.
Synonyms: give, provide, supply, furnish, make available, contribute, make, cause to be/become, leave.
Example: “In view of the examination of the facts and evidence on record and the analysis of the decisions rendered by the Supreme Court, the Election Commission concludes that the respondent had given his implied authorization for the publication of the advertisements in question and had knowingly taken advantage of the same,” the commission said in its order.
10.Parochial (adjective)
Meaning: having a limited or narrow outlook or scope.
Synonyms: narrow-minded, small-minded, provincial, insular, narrow, small-town, inward-looking, limited, restricted, localist, conservative, conventional, short-sighted, petty, close-minded, blinkered, myopic, introverted, illiberal, hidebound, intolerant.
Example: I don’t do this solely out of a parochial linguistic pride, though there is some of that of course. But there are other more important reasons.
