Mahatma Gandhi once stated that: “Sanitation is more important than Independence”. He very well understood that sanitation and cleanliness are integral parts of healthy and peaceful lives. A pollution free clean India would be the best tribute to the nation. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a cleanliness mass movement organized by the government of India and takes into action by the honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. This is the most valuable expedition which everyone must be aware of for the bright future of India. This program was launched officially on 2nd October 2014 at Raj Ghat, New Delhi, under the name ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. Also referred to as Swachh Bharat Campaign or Clean India drive or Clean India Mission in the memory of great Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi’s 145th birthday.
The government of India has aimed to make India a clean India by 2nd of October 2019 (means 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi) through this campaign.The mission has targeted aims like eliminating the open defecation, Construct individual, cluster and community toilets, eradicating manual scavenging, complete disposal and reuse of solid and liquid wastes, bringing behavioral changes to people and motivate health practices, spreading cleanliness awareness among people, strengthening the cleanliness systems in the urban and rural areas as well as creating user friendly environment for all private sectors interested for investing in India for cleanliness maintenance and to present this country as an ideal country before the world.
By the completion of the cleanliness program, it would indirectly draw the attention of business investors in India and also tourists attraction would be more from all over the world. This would afford a more serious outcome economic growth of India. The Swachh Abhiyan can play a great role in reducing death rate, health expenses and lethal disease rate. Due to the half-hearted cooperation of the citizens of India, all these drives failed to make a strong impact but efforts are still in the progress by some altruistic citizens of the country. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan can only be completely successful, if each and every Indian takes up this campaign as his/her own responsibility and join hands together to make it a triumphant mission.
Some other important bullet points regarding Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are as follows:
1. On 2 October, 2014, Modi nominated nine celebrities from various fields to propagate the mission. The nominated personalities included, Anil Ambani, Baba Ramdev, Kamal Hassan, Priyanka Chopra, Sachin Tendulkar, Salman Khan, Shashi Tharoor and others.
2. Various brand ambassadors are nominated by the Prime Minister to this event to induce it a successful campaign. This mission facilitates the participation of private sectors towards cleanliness program.
3. To give a boost to the project, the government has sought financial and technical support from the World Bank. Also, all big corporates and private organizations are asked to join the movement as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
4. According to government data, in January 2015, 7.1 lakh individual household toilets have been built under this dream project. So far, Karnataka is the best performer by achieving 61% of the target while Punjab is the worst performer by achieving 5% of the target. .
