1. Slam (verb)
Meaning: criticize severely., shut (a door, window, or lid) forcefully and loudly.
Synonyms: bang, shut/close with a bang, shut/close noisily, shut/close with a crash.
Example: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his third visit to poll-bound Gujarat this month on Sunday, slammed the Opposition for questioning the Election Commission’s motives in delaying the announcement of the Assembly poll schedule for the State.
2. Veil (verb)
Meaning: partially conceal, disguise, or obscure.
Synonyms: covert, surreptitious, hidden, concealed, disguised, camouflaged, masked, suppressed, underlying, unrevealed, implied, indirect, hinted at.
Example: In a veiled dig at Congress leader P. Chidambaram, who had criticised the EC, saying the EC had “authorised” the PM to announce the dates for Assembly polls at a rally in Gujarat, Mr. Modi said, “Someone who won during recounting is targeting the EC now.”
3. Precedent (noun)
Meaning: an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances.
Synonyms: model, exemplar, example, pattern, previous case, prior case, previous instance/example, prior instance/example.
Example: After the Election Commission announced the poll schedule for Himachal Pradesh, breaking the precedent of announcing polls for Gujarat and HP together, it came under sharp attack from Opposition parties.
4. Unanimously (adverb)
Meaning: without opposition; with the agreement of all people involved.
Synonyms: without opposition, with one accord, with one mind, to a man, as one, one and all, each and every one, bar none, without exception.
Example: Many economists, he said, had agreed unanimously that the fundamentals of the economy were strong. The PM devoted time to cite data and economic indicators to buttress his claim, apparently countering criticism regarding his handling of the economy.
5. Rejig (verb)
Meaning: organize (something) differently; rearrange, re-equip with machinery; refit.
Example: Some rejig in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate structure is required to reduce the burden on small and medium businesses, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said on Sunday.
6. Tweak (verb)
Meaning: twist or pull (something) sharply, improve (a mechanism or system) by making fine adjustments to it.
Synonyms: pull sharply, twist, tug, pinch, nip, twitch, squeeze, adjust, make adjustments to, modify.
Example: To remove the hassles being faced by medium and small businesses in tax payment and filing of GST returns, it has tweaked various aspects of the new regime. The GST Council has also rationalised rates on over 100 commodities and made the refund process easier for exporters.
7. Upfront (adverb)
Meaning: at the front; in front, (of a payment) in advance.
Synonyms: in advance, beforehand, ahead of time, in readiness
Example: Of this unit cost, trawl owners have to only pay ₹8 lakh upfront and ₹16 lakh through a loan from the Pandyan Grama Bank. The balance ₹56 lakh will be a subsidy shared by the State and Central governments.
8.Coalesce (verb)
Meaning: come together to form one mass or whole.
Example: The plains-based parties, which recently coalesced into the Rastriya Janata Party (RJP), have been able to manipulate the weaknesses of the present Nepali Congress-Maoist coalition government to force unconscionable compromises in conduct of the elections.
9.Roughshod (adjective)
Meaning: (of a horse) having shoes with nail heads projecting to prevent slipping.
Example: Through immediate amendment to the Constitution, running roughshod over parliamentary procedure, they want to increase the number of local bodies units in the plains, adjust the electoral college system for the Upper House, and redefine the boundaries of the newly minted provinces — essentially setting a Lakshman Rekha between hill and plain.
10.Travesty (noun)
Meaning: a false, absurd, or distorted representation of something.
Synonyms: misrepresentation, distortion, perversion, corruption, poor imitation, poor substitute,
mockery, parody, caricature;
Example: All of which is a travesty of constitutionalism, as the proper entity for amendment of provisions of substance would be the newly elected Parliament rather than the caretaker House of today. Among other things, redrawing of boundaries should require concurrence of the federal units concerned, rather than be a matter of unilateral decision by the centre.
