1.Prelude (noun)
Meaning: an action or event serving as an introduction to something more important.
Synonyms: preliminary, overture, opening, preparation, introduction, start, beginning, curtain-raiser, lead-in, precursor, forerunner, harbinger, herald
Example: In January 2013, within minutes of Rahul Gandhi’s anointment as Congress vice president, fireworks lit up the winter evening in Jaipur. The occasion was the party’s chintan shivir, or brainstorming session, and the announcement was seen to be a prelude to his becoming the next president. The air was decidedly celebratory.
2.Trepidation (noun)
Meaning: a feeling of fear or anxiety about something that may happen.
Synonyms: fear, apprehension, dread, fearfulness, apprehensiveness, agitation, anxiety, worry, nervousness, tension, misgivings, unease, uneasiness, foreboding, disquiet, disquietude, perturbation, discomposure, dismay, consternation, alarm, panic.
Example: In fact, even Kesri’s rise didn’t evoke the trepidation Mr. Gandhi’s elevation as president is doing now, partly because, on earlier occasions, there had been almost no lag time between the decision and its implementation.
3.Interregnum (noun)
Meaning: a period when normal government is suspended, especially between successive reigns or regimes.
Example: Earlier, after Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death and a brief interregnum when Gulzarilal Nanda was acting Prime Minister, she — already Information and Broadcasting Minister — defeated her formidable adversary Morarji Desai in the election for Congress Parliamentary Party leader and became Prime Minister in 1966.
4.Catapult (verb)
Meaning: hurl or launch (something) with or as if with a catapult, move suddenly or at great speed as though hurled by a catapult.
Synonyms: propel, launch, hurl, hurtle, fling, send flying, send, let fly, let loose, fire, blast.
Example: When Rajiv Gandhi was catapulted to the posts of party president and Prime Minister after his mother’s assassination, he was an MP and party general secretary, having joined politics because of his brother Sanjay’s death. He had been in active politics for just four years (unlike his son who has completed 13 years) during which he demonstrated his administrative skills by successfully managing the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi.
5.Recalibrate (verb)
Meaning: calibrate (something) again or differently.
Example: That the talks to negotiate the India-European Union trade pact, the Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), have not progressed during the 14th India-EU Summit, held in New Delhi on October 6, is, among other things, a sign that both sides continue to recalibrate their bargaining power and understanding of their relative positions on the international stage.
6.Precarious (adjective)
Meaning: not securely held or in position; dangerously likely to fall or collapse, dependent on
chance; uncertain.
Synonyms: uncertain, insecure, unpredictable, undependable, risky, hazardous, hanging by a thread.
Example: “The human species will have to populate a new planet within 100 years if it is to survive,” says the BBC publicity blurb for the show, adding, “With climate change, overdue asteroid strikes, epidemics and population growth, our own planet is increasingly precarious.”

7.Connotation (noun)
Meaning: an idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary
meaning.
Synonyms: overtone, undertone, undercurrent, implication, hidden meaning.
Example: The word ‘sankalp’ has several connotations but mainly – an orientation of the mind or
heart; intention, determination, decision, wish, resolve, and will power.
8.Malevolent (adjective)
Meaning: having or showing a wish to do evil to others.
Synonyms: malicious, spiteful, hostile, evil-minded, baleful, bitter, evil-intentioned, poisonous,
venomous, evil, malign, malignant, rancorous, vicious, vindictive, revengeful, vengeful, pernicious.
Example: Intention, though, can be wholesome or otherwise; malevolent intentions are designed to harm life, property or reputation. Good intentions are to promote materialistic goals and Mahasankalp, higher intentions, are for enlightenment of self and others.
9.Orthodoxy (noun)
Meaning: authorized or generally accepted theory, doctrine, or practice.
Synonyms: doctrine, belief, conviction, creed, dogma, credo, theory, view, idea, tenet, teaching,
practice, received wisdom, article of faith.
Example: Just as dangerous, and no less important to ordinary Americans, however, is Mr Trump’s plan for the economy. It treats orthodoxy, accuracy and consistency as if they were simply to be negotiated away in a series of earth-shattering deals.
10.Compliance (noun)
Meaning: the action or fact of complying with a wish or command.
Example: But why are they doing this? It surely can’t be that they are celebrating the roll-out of
the new indirect tax regime. By all accounts, most companies are quaking, fearing the huge increase in compliance costs and paperwork that GST will bring.
