Italy to Host G-7 Interior Ministers’ Summit on Security
About G-7 in Brief-

i. Italy will host a summit of G-7 interior ministers centered on security issues in the fall. According to Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti, the meeting is being organized at the request of Italy’s G-7 partners: Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States.
ii. Italy currently holds the rotating helm of the Group of Seven industrialized nations. The summit is expected to be held in October 2017.
About G-7 in Brief-
- Originally the group comprised six members- France, Italy, West Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States.
- It was founded in 1975.
- Canada became the seventh member to begin attending the summits in 1976, after which the name ‘Group 7’ or G7 Summit was used.
- Russia formally joined the group in 1998, resulting in the creation of a new governmental political forum, the Group of Eight or G8.
- However, Russia was eliminated from the group in 2014 after it annexed the Ukrainian territory of Crimea.
IAAF World Championships 2017

i. The 16th edition of IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Championships 2017 was held in London. The championships were held in the London Stadium in Stratford. ‘Hero-the Hedgehog’ was a Mascot of 2017 IAAF World Championships and ‘Whizbee-the Bee’ was the Mascot for the Para Athletics.
ii. The USA topped the tally of Medals with 30 medals. Top 5 Countries in the list of Medals were-
- US (30 Medals)
- Kenya (11 Medals)
- Great Britain (6 Medals)
- Poland (8 Medals)
- China (7 Medals)

Environment Minister Launches “Harit Diwali, Swasth Diwali” Campaign

i. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, launched the “Harit Diwali, Swasth Diwali” campaign.
ii. Addressing a gathering of about 800 children from schools of Delhi and NCR, the Minister impressed upon the children the importance of their contribution towards reducing pollution by not bursting harmful fire crackers during Diwali.
Malala Yousafzai Gets a Place at Oxford

i. Pakistani rights activist Malala Yousafzai secured a place at Oxford University after getting her A-level results.
ii. She will philosophy, politics, and economics at the prestigious varsity.

World Humanitarian Day: 19 August

i. World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world.
ii. The campaign was launched on WHD with the theme- #NotATarget. The Day is organized by the United Nations.
